Shelf will allow you to view all types of information like weather forecast and recently used application. Shelf will also allow you to quickly add memos or reminders for your important meetings.

View Notifications By Waving Your Hand Over Your Phone:

Ambient display is one of the best feature introduced by Google in the previous Lollipop version. This feature has been tweaked a bit by OnePlus on the new OnePlus 3 device. Whenever you receive a notification the display turn on briefly. This will allow you to see the notification without unlocking the phone. When this happens the screen wakes up in a black and white mode to conserve battery power.

The OnePlus 3 also features a touch-less wake mode, which will allow you to quickly see the notifications in the ambient display by waving your hand over the screen. And this is how you can use the feature.

  1. Navigate to the Settings menu
  2. Navigate to the Display tab
  3. Enable Ambient display mode
  4. Enable Proximity wake

Show Battery Percentage In The Status Bar:

Even though the default battery indicator on the status bar is decent and simple, you might want to change how it shows how much battery power is left. And the OnePlus 3 allows you to change how it looks and this is how you can change it to your preference:

  1. Navigate to the Settings menu
  2. Click on Battery
  3. Click on the battery icon at the top
  4. Select the Battery percent option

You can enable battery percentage inside the battery icon after enabling the developer options like this:

  3. Scroll down and tap on Build Number 7 times
  4. Then “You are now a developer” toast will appear

After that..

  3. When you release it, you will see the message “Congrats! System UI Tuner has been added to Settings
  4. Navigate to the Settings menu
  5. Scroll down and click System UI Tuner

Pure Black Dark Mode UI:

We have talked about this numerous times in the past, but the benefit of having an AMOLED screen over LCD display is that it saves your battery power. Not like the traditional LCD display which will illuminate the entire screen irrespective of what is being displayed. The AMOLED display on your device will only illuminate the pixels that needs to be displayed. For example, displaying a pure black wallpaper consumes less battery power as there are less pixels that needs to be turned on.

If you want to conserve battery power or you just want to try a different look, the OnePlus 3 features a Dark Mode which enables a dark theme in all of the phone’s UI. This function is located in the Customization tab in the main Settings menu.

Not like the “Night Modes” we have experienced in the past, this is an AMOLED display friendly pure black theme. Applications like Settings or file explorers will be blacked out, and not only that but the folders on the home screen and application drawer will also be darkened.

Custom Sound Profiles:

The alert slider of the OnePlus 3 is a physical button on the left side of the device which will allow you to quickly toggle your sound profiles without unlocking or waking up your phone. It is surely one of the most convenient feature we have seen on any of the android smartphone till date. If you are in a meeting or in a tense situation you can quickly silent your phone without anyone knowing.

The Alert Slider offers 3 sound profile options which are silence, priority, and all. And these profiles can be adjusted as per your convenience in the main settings menu. You can choose different settings for call alerts, reminders, media, etc. This is one of my personal favorite feature of the OnePlus 3.

Have your alarm ring, even if your phone is off

Ever happened to you when you need to wake up and you left the phone switched off before going to sleep? Well it happened to me, but OnePlus has taken care of this issue by this unique feature. The “Wake if the device is off” option in the main clock application will do the thing. And this is quite a unique feature that you are not going to find on many devices.

To do the magic, you just need to expand the alarm options in the main alarm tab. When you create a new alarm, tap on the “+” icon which will guide you further. And if you have already created an alarm and want to enable this feature, you just need to click on the same icon and it will be there.

Adjust The Color Composition:

The OnePlus 3 display offers more bluish tinting by default. And by depending on your personal preferences you might want to adjust the color composition. Sometimes maybe you will feel the need to warm up things a little bit. And OnePlus has taken care of your need by adding an option to adjust the colors. To change the color balance you simply need to navigate to the display section in the main settings app. There you can change the color balance by sliding the bar as per your needs.

Create A Unique Home Screen:

Sometimes we get bored with the same look of the phone and changing just the wallpaper cannot be much of help. Therefore, you might want to take a step further, and OnePlus provides the capability to change the default app icons for your customization needs. The default launcher of OnePlus 3 supports icon packs therefore, you can replace the default icon set with the one you like on the play store. There are actually plenty of icon packs available in both paid and free versions. So you will not face any trouble in finding the one that best fits for you.

As soon as you find the icon pack of your liking this is how you can replace it with default icon pack:

  1. Look for “icons” or “icon pack” on Google Play Store
  2. Download & Install them just like any other application
  3. When installed, press and hold on any blank area of your home screen
  4. Click on Customize
  5. Swipe the cards displayed at the bottom side of the screen until you see Icons
  6. Click on the icon pack you have downloaded to see the Preview
  7. Click on the Save button in upper right corner of the screen to apply the icon pack

 Speed Up Animations:

Undoubtedly OnePlus 3 is one of the best performers we have ever get our hands on but, sometimes those animations on your device seems lagging. But you can change this with the developer options in your OnePlus 3 device. This will make your user interface more snappy and fast. And here is how you can make the change:

  1. Navigate to the Settings menu
  2. Scroll down and tap on About phone
  3. Scroll down and tap on Build Number 7 times
  4. Then “You are now a developer” toast will appear
  5. Press back button and you will see a new setting: Developer options above About Phone

  1. Navigate to the Developer options
  2. Scroll down and click Window animation and choose .5x
  3. Change Transition animation to .5x
  4. Change Animator duration scale to .5x

Use a pure black lock screen wallpaper for added battery savings

This is one of the features that we recommend to the users of all the AMOLED display phones. You can significantly decrease the battery consumption using a pure black wallpaper. As we all wake our devices multiple times during a day to check notifications and for other things. Using a complete black wallpaper helps to conserve battery power as the phone does not need to light up many pixels like we discussed earlier in this article. And here is how you can apply this setting:

pure black wallpaper

Open and save this image in your phone

  1. Press and hold on a blank area of your home screen
  2. Tap on Wallpapers
  3. Choose the Lock screen option
  4. Select the option My photos
  5. Click on the downloaded black wallpaper
  6. Save the settings

Use Night Mode for less eye strain during the evening hours:

If you are watching TV before going to bed, or browsing social media after a tired daily routine, studies shows that viewing your smartphone at night have the negative impact on you and can disturb your sleeping schedule. Studies suggest that this happens because of the blue light emitting from your phone’s display. It makes your brain think that it’s still daytime and in return brain produces less melatonin which is your body’s sleep aid.

Smartphone OEM’s are already fighting this problem with a feature that can change the tinting of your display as per the actual time. This feature removes spiking blue light with a sleep friendly and warmer tinting. This feature is very much similar to the Night Shift feature of the iOS. This is located in thai main settings menu. This feature also has a toggle that you can have in the quick settings panel.

Camera Functions & Shooting Modes:

Whenever you get a new phone you have to be familiar with the camera application. The OnePlus 3 offers various camera settings, features, and shooting modes for your choice. These features will enable you to capture scenes perfectly weather its day time or night-time.

As soon as you open the default camera software you will be greeted with HD, HDR mode, and Flash toggles on the top of the screen. The HD mode is used to increase sharpness to capture most of the details of the scene, HDR mode is used to increase the dynamic range of your image but, it also takes a millisecond delay in capturing the image, while Flash is self-explanatory.

On the down side of the screen there is a settings button next to the shutter. This will introduce you with the options to change the self-timer, grid lines, and aspect ratio.

Different shooting modes can be found in the upper left corner which are explained below.

  • Time-lapse – Time lapse will allow you to record a long-span of time and play it in a scaled video form. The timer indicates you about the length of the video.
  • Slow motion – As the name proposes, this feature will allow you to record video in slow motion in 720p resolution at 120 fps.
  • Photo – Standard image capturing mode with different settings and modes.
  • Video – This is the general video recording mode where you can record videos in different settings and quality.
  • Manual – This mode lets you to personalize camera settings like focus, shutter speed, white balance, ISO.
  • Panorama – This mode takes multiple photos and combines them to display like a long panorama image.

Customize Notifications:

Not all the notifications have the equal priority. Even though most of the application will display a notification when it needs your addressing or someone sends you a message, sometimes some app spams you with useless notifications and that is very much irritating. Games and adwares are the main offenders who sends you hourly notifications. But to prevent this Android gives you full control over notifications. This allows you to control when and how they are displayed.

The easiest way to control any app’s notification is when that particular app sends you a notification. You can simply long press on that notification to have the “i” icon. Tap on that icon to open up the notification options. From there you can disable the notifications from that application. You can do this same thing by searching for notification option in the main settings menu with the help of the small search option on the top right corner. If you do not wish to completely disable notifications from that app, you can also hide notifications on lock screen from the same application. And you can also assign it as a higher priority notification to alert you when the phone is on silent mode.

Stolen Phone OR Lost Phone:

This is something that no one cares about before it happens. Lost or stolen smartphone is one of the worst things that can happen to you nowadays. In this type of event, you can locate your smart device using the Google Service. And not only that but you can also wipe all your data from the phone remotely. But for this, your phone need to be connected to the internet and this is a serious limitation to this service as no thief is going to use your phone without deleting your Google account from your phone.

Anyways, something is better than nothing. So to use this functionality you need to enable “Android Device Manager” in the trust agents.

  1. First, navigate to like Bluetooth, GPS, and WiFi. This also allows you to set display brightness with an easy slider.

But sometimes the quick settings panel also gets crowded with unwanted toggles. In this case, it is difficult to find the wanted toggle when you are in a hurry. But your OnePlus 3 allows you to change this thing. You can rearrange the toggles as per your preference and you can even add and remove unwanted toggles. Here is how you can do it:

  1. Open the notification shade
  2. Click on the edit icon
  3. Rearrange them by dragging, click on them to show and hide them
  4. Click on the circle to reset it to default
  5. When done, click on the disk icon and save the changes

Keep Your Apps From being Frozen:

In the new Android version Marshmallow 6.0.1, Google have introduced a new feature called “Doze”. This is basically a power saving feature that puts your Android into a low power state which in turn completely freezes some applications along with their notifications. However, this only happens if you do not wake up your device in a long time.

Even though you will not find any references to this in the settings menu but it is there. Marshmallow optimizes all the applications by default with only one exception Google Play services. Maybe you have noticed delay in receiving notifications from certain applications or maybe mails are not being updated on a timely manner. If this happens with you then maybe you need to white list those applications. You can do this by navigating to the main settings application, then scroll down to the Apps tab and tap on the Gear icon to select battery optimization. There you will find the option to do that.

Delete Your Data On Your Phone And Reset To Factory Settings:

If you are reselling your device or returning to the retailer for some reason, it is very important to delete all your saved personal data. Therefore, before you do any wipes just make sure that you have taken backups of your important data with your preferred service.

After you’ve taken care of the backup follow the below steps to wipe all your data and personal information off your phone.

Warning: this will wipe clean everything from your device including all the applications and media.

  1. Navigate to the main Settings menu
  2. Scroll down and tap on Backup & reset
  3. Choose Factory data reset
  4. Confirm and tap on RESET PHONE

Screen Pinning: To Lock User Into A Specific App

Our smartphones have lots of sensitive information. Therefore, when someone asks to use your phone to make a call or something you are handing over all the sensitive data. But now you can leave all the stress behind by taking the benefit of the screen pinning feature on your OnePlus 3 device. This feature allows you to lock the user in the selected application. To enable this feature you need to perform these steps:

  2. Tap on Security & fingerprint
  3. Scroll down and tap on Screen pinning

  2. Open the Recent apps
  3. Click on the pushpin icon in the bottom corner of the display
  4. Screen is pinned” toast will confirm the action

App Permissions:  To Access Your Data OR Application

Even though it seems irritating, customizing application permissions are necessary. Applications ask you for permission when the first time you use it as applications need permission to access contacts, user data, photos, camera, location, etc.

If you have given permission to some application accidentally then you can always deny or accept permissions from the settings menu in the permission tab. And in the same way, if you have accidentally denied permission then you can also allow it afterward.
