This week, Google finally released the consumer edition of Android 7.0 Nougat. Unfortunately, the access to it was pretty limited, as only Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Google Pixel C users can currently receive it, if they’re enrolled in the Developer Program. Unfortunately, if you own an older Nexus model, you won’t get if officially.
Like expected, Nexus 5 owners were disappointed after hearing this, but it didn’t take long until an Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Nexus 5 was made available, thanks to an XDA Developer user!
We’re talking about s special ROM, which is an initial Android 7.0 Nougat build for the Nexus 5, so it does contain a few bugs that can lead to issues. However, it’s perfect for those who want the latest Android on their Nexus 5. Let’s see how it can be installed…
Warnings & Requirements
Like mentioned above, Android 7.0 Nougat for Nexus 5 is not completely stable. You might experience issues with the Bluetooth connectivity, camera and many more. On the other side, we can say that the Wi-Fi and Audio (for calls and basics) are completely functional.
- Your Nexus 5 needs to be rooted and have TWRP Recovery installed in order to use this ROM.
- The ROM works only for the Nexus 5. Don’t install it on other devices.
- The installation process will completely erase your data, so it’s recommended to perform a full backup before starting, in order to avoid unpleasant situations.
- Follow the steps below correctly, as there’s the risk of bricking your device if something isn’t done correctly.
- Make sure your phone has a battery level above 60% before starting. However, our recommendation would be to start with a fully charged one.

Install Android 7.0 Nougat on Nexus 5
Step 1: Download the Android 7.0 Nougat zip file and save it on your device.
Step 2: Boot your device into Recovery mode, by pressing Volume Down + the Power button.
Step 3: After entering Recovery mode, create an Nandroid backup, in order to avoid the scenario in which something goes wrong and you lose all your data.
Step 4: Go to Wipe > Advanced Wipe > Select Wipe cache, Dalvik cache, System and data. Swipe in order to confirm the Factory Reset.
Step 5: Go to Install and locate the Android 7.0 Nougat zip file.
Step 6: Swipe in order to install the ROM file. The whole process should take around 10 minutes.
Step 7: After you’re done with the ROM, repeat the same process for the Gapps zip file, which can be found here.
Step 8: Go to Wipe > Advanced Wipe and this time select only Wipe cache and Dalvik cache.
Step 9: Reboot your phone.
That’s it, you have successfully installed Android 7.0 Nougat on the Nexus 5. Remember, this is not a very stable build and there are high chances of experiencing various issues while using it. Keep this aspect in mind before installing!
