Currently, the adoption rate for Google’s latest mobile operating system, Android 7.0 Nougat, is very small, barely surpassing one percent, but with Google I/O 2017 getting closer, there’s no doubt that hardcore fans are already thinking about the next version, currently know as Android O.
Every year, at the conference, Google is revealing the name of the next Android version, so it won’t be long until the first developer preview will be available. Therefore, a lot of potential users are thinking at the name Google could opt for their next dessert…
There are quite a few variants, but Android Oreo is definitely the most popular among fans. Also, in order to keep the rumor mill going, Hiroshi Lockheimer, SVP of Android, Chrome OS and Play, just tweeted a GIF showing an Oreo cake. How’s that for creating some buzz?

Of course, this doesn’t mean anything, but, on the other side, why would a person in his position share, totally random, an Oreo cake? Could this be the first hint at the name of the next Android version?
This wouldn’t be the first time when Google opts for a well-known dessert brand as the name of their operating system, since they did it a few years ago, with Android 4.4 KitKat, a joint-venture with Nestle.
However, Mr. Lockheimer might as well be joking with his followers, since last year, he also tweeted an image which was basically saying that Android N will be called Nutella. And we all know how that ended…
Speaking about 2016, Google started a crowdsourcing campaign, asking everyone to suggest names for their next Android version, after the Android N preview was released. A dedicated website was set up and visitors could send their suggestions. It will be very interesting to see if they’re going to do the same thing this year!
